Edward Lowassa Resigns

Edward Lowassa Tanzania’s Prime minister has resigned after being found out to have been involved in a energy deal corruption scandal. After claims that his office was involved in improperly awarding a contract to US-based electricity company Richmond Development in 2006. Lowassa denies any wrong doing and said on the matter:

“I’ve thought long and hard about this issue. I’ve offered my resignation without any ill motive,” he said in an speech to parliament on Thursday morning.

“I’ve done it to as a sign of my responsibility and to register my disagreement with the manner in which the committee misled parliament.”

Irish Prime Minister on 5 day visit

Bertie Ahern the Irish Prime Minister, is visiting Tanzania for 5 days, with a group of over 50 delegates from Irish companies, thus making it the largest ever trade meeting from Ireland to go to Tanzania. I didn’t realise this until reading the article on this, but Tanzania is one of the nine countries receiving aid funding from the Irish development agency Irish Aid.

“In 2007-2010 Tanzania will receive 170 million euros (251 million dollars) in direct bilateral assistance from Ireland, with 40 million euros of that total being provided this year.”

This is really amazing to hear, and I can’t wait to hear more of the outcome of the trip, any business that is genarated from this is obviously a huge sucess, and I hope it happens, but not just for the richer areas of Tanzania, I hope that any companies will look into the possibility of opening in the poorer area’s with fair wages for potential workers.

Tanzania wins case

I’m glad to read, that Tanzania has won, the dispute they have been having with the British company Biwater, and therefore winning £3million in damages to the Tanzanian government, because of the world bank providing evidence that the services deteriorating in Dar es Salaam under Biwater.

I am personally so happy with this outcome, having been to Dar es Salaam myself, I find that a British company letting services slide that much unacceptable, had that happened in Britain or America there would of been an uproar, it simply would not of been allowed to happen, and I do not think businesses should be allowed to get away with third rate jobs, just because they are in a developing country. Especially with the water born diseases and contaminated water that effects so much of Africa, the last thing we need is a business getting away with providing second class services to do with water and sewage.

Although I am disappointed to hear that Biwater has lodged a case at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) against Tanzania. The case is being held in secret at The Hague and is thought to involve a claim for approximately $20m (£10m). The ruling is expected during 2008 and could even come within weeks.
